Kim from the excellent
Crimethrutime website has tipped me off to a new author for my database - Gerri Brightwell who has recently published a Victorian mystery -
The Dark Lantern - in the US. As soon as I saw it, I recognised the cover...

Read more about The Dark Lantern on the
Random House website and my
review of Maisie Dobbs for Over My Dead Body.

I remember reading this edition of Maisie Dobbs (which I didn't enjoy as much as you). I like this cover better than the repackaged "YA" covers. Well spotted, though, on the "twins" -- incredible how many books there are like this, with the same picture.
Is there a chance that the piece of artwork is simply from a stock image library so anybody can buy it and use it on the cover of a book, it does seem to be the same art though it's been changed somewhat in colour etc...
That would be my guess, too, Andrew.
Yes, that's probably how it works. I just like solving the "I've seen that cover before" feeling :-).
