This week's selection for "cover opinions" is the US and UK covers for Liza Marklund's Red Wolf tr. Neil Smith, which has just been published in the UK. The US edition will come out on 15 February 2011.
So what are you thoughts on the US (LHS) and UK (RHS) covers? Which would entice you to pick the book up if you were not familiar with Liza Marklund?
If you have read it, how well does the cover match the story?
Bonus question: Does a cover quote from a well-known author encourage you to pick up the book?
Here is the Euro Crime review by Maxine of Red Wolf.

The cover quote from that famous author would put me off. I think a photo of the author on the book cover would entice me. ;o)
I don't really like either of these so I don't think I would pick them up based on the cover.
And NO a cover quot has zero impact on me regardless of who has written it. I think they're all pretty bogus
Despite my penchant for blue covers, I prefer the US one. The picture is more dramatic. The quotation on the UK cover ruins it for me.
The book is really great, though!
I prefer the colour scheme on the RHS book and I like the quote - sells it well in my view.
Karen - I'm not really keen on either cover, but if I had to choose, I'd choose the UK cover. It's less jarring.
In this case I prefer the US hardback cover.
The quote from Patterson on the UK one is a turn off and it is far too busy in terms of art work.
Your review though makes me want to investigate this series.
I don't know about either cover. How about just a photo or drawing of a wolf in a blizzard with subtle title and authors' names?
Anyway, that author quote turns me OFF! And I'll never read anything by JP anyway. A quote on the front cover? It has to be by someone I like and respect and a bit subtler.
My woe: The only book that my library carries in English by Liza Marklund is the one she co-authored with the aforementioned book quote writer.
What will motivate me to read and buy "Red Wolf," are positive book reviews by readers who have good taste and explain well why they like a book, like posted here or at Petrona or RTR, or a few other blogs.
That's how I figure out what to read, not based on covers or author quotes.
I don´t like either - glaring colours usually put me off.
depends up on the famous author, if it's not an author I like then it could be a turn off. I like the red cover. I agree with Kathy - good reviews, whether in the print media or blogosphere (probably the blogosphere more than print media) influence me the most.
