An Uncertain Place - Cover Opinions

This week's selection for "cover opinions" is the US and UK covers for Fred Vargas's CWA International Dagger shortlisted, An Uncertain Place.

So what are your thoughts on the US (LHS) and UK (RHS) covers? Which would entice you to pick the book up if you were not familiar with the books of Fred Vargas? (The US edition will be out 25 October 2011.)

If you have read it, how well do the covers match the story?

Read the Euro Crime review (by me) of An Uncertain Place tr Sian Reynolds.

For once, I like the background photo of both. But I´d prefer her name in smaller types so I coud see the trees properly ;)

Karen - I've missed this feature. I like the UK cover option better; the contrast between light and shadow in it got my attention.

The UK cover shows a cemetery, Highgate Cemetery features in the book so I think that is superior.

Both are okay, but like the British cover better.

Would have suggested Vargas' name be a bit smaller and the book title a bit bigger. It's barely visible.

I hope her books catch on more in the U.S. market. It will be interesting to see. Many U.S. readers like their mysteries straight-forward, without a lot of quirkiness (her trademark), and fair justice meted out at the end to culprits.

I'll buy this book (not in library yet) and loan it to friends who haven't read Vargas' books yet, and see how they react. Hopefully, they'll like her book.

I like them both, but am drawn a little more to the US cover. I'm really looking forward to reading this one.

The UK version does it for me - it feels more atmospheric.

I like them both. I suppose anyone in the UK is more likely to recognise Highgate cemetary than anyone in the US, so they did not think it worth a photo of the actual place, or maybe the US cover is from later in the book (no spoilers!). I also suppose her name is in such big letters because she's won all those prizes so considered more of a draw than her titles? Anyway, I like them both and think they both convey the book's sense well - or one theme in it, to be accurate.

Just stumbled across this blog whilst browsing online. I shot the cover image for the US version of this book. Glad that most people seem to like it :-)
