I've been humming and hawing about getting a Nintendo DS as I'm not sure how much I'd use it but there're more and more games that I'd like to try. The one I first noticed was

Buffy The Vampire Slayer will return in video game form for an exclusive Nintendo DS title.
Publisher 505 Games will launch Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Sacrifice for the handheld console this November.
The game, penned by TV series writer Rob Deshotel, will be similar in style to the 2002 third-person Xbox Buffy game. The story is thought to take place after the events of the hit show's final season.
How much longer can I hold out? And should I give in
now?

I strongly suggest you first find in the neighborhood --advertise locally if need be-- a teenager with a Nintendo DS already, and a somewhat pensive/ nerdy manner (shouldn't be too hard). Offer to buy him/her one of these games if s/he'll introduce you to their world, show you the ropes, teach ya da argot. Apart from gaining valuable insights into utter meaninglessness of them, you'll be able to restrict your losses when you elect to go back to Ancienttech Bookdevice 1.0, the one with built-in paging controls sans help file, and with Magick™ no-battery shell life!
My daughter loves hers (she's 12 going on 13). Also the battery seems to last for ages which is great for travelling. There seem to be a lot of games that are not "shoot 'em up", these days.
However, the screen is jolly small which is not that great.
Have you thought about the Wii? That seems to be fab from what I see of it at home -- uses your TV screen so is not portable, but some great games, as well as the dreaded Wii Fit. The little "Miis" which you make, go in and out of all the games you buy, a sweet little world.
