Sällström experienced the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in Thailand with her one year old daughter.

They survived only because she held on to a tree with one hand, and held her daughter with the other.

Sällström was found dead in her home in Malmö shortly before midnight on 13 February 2007. She had been released from a psychiatric unit, where she had been receiving treatment for depression traced to her experience in the 2004 tsunami, a short while previously. The cause of her death was suicide.
