Field Grey - Cover Opinions

This week's selection for "cover opinions" is the US and UK covers for Philip Kerr's Field Grey (US: Field Gray).

So what are you thoughts on the US (LHS) and UK (RHS) covers? Which would entice you to pick the book up if you were not familiar with Philip Kerr? The US edition is to be published 14 April and a UK paperback edition will be out 31 March (with a similar cover to the hardback).

If you have read it, how well do the covers suit the story?

Read the Euro Crime review by Laura of Field Grey.

I haven't read the book, but I like both covers. They are so different, aren't they? The red cover gives an impression of wartime romance, whereas the white one gives an impression of wartime, er, war - and cold at that. I think I might pick up either book to read a bit more about it, on the basis of these covers.

Karen - I like the UK cover better. I don't know why, but I think the starkness of it appeals to me; I like its minimalism.

This is a great example of how much covers can vary. The US one definitely suggests romance but also a female protagonist, with the war thrown in. I like the UK one but it's definitely bleak and stresses isolation; if I was a new reader I'd expect a war or Holocaust novel and not a mystery/espionage thriller.

I'd read either though judging from the cover but that's just me.

I think the US one is more intriguing. I was surprised to read that the covers are different for books published in the US and UK.

The UK one, definitely. It's got grey in title, why make it red? I'm halfway through at the minute and it is top quality stuff. If it continues to the end in the same vein, it is going to take a special book to top as a best read of the year. And now I'm back off to carry on reading it.

I'd have to say the red cover is more catchy.
