OT: Night of the Living Trekkies

This one's in the horror genre but it sounds fun to a Trek fan like myself! Night of the Living Trekkies by Kevin Anderson and Sam Stall will be published on 14 July in the UK.

Synopsis: Our story follows a rag-tag group of Trekkies en route to an annual Star Trek convention. Arriving with homemade uniforms, glued-on prosthetics, and plastic phasers, these fanboys know more than any rational adult should know about Kirk, Spock, Next Generation, particle physics, black holes, and Ricardo Montalban. But when aliens release a zombie plague upon the Earth, all of this Starfleet training suddenly becomes a lot more relevant. Our fanboys find themselves trapped in the Botany Bay Hotel and Convention Center - and desperate to escape. Some will be assimilated. Others will summon the courage of their favorite characters and perform brave feats of heroism. And one reluctant fan will discover his inner Trekkie, rise up, and take command of the crew.

OT: A Vulcan welcomes you to Euro Crime

Spotted at Shelf Monkey. I chose 'Spock' as I can do the eyebrow thing (a la Roger Moore).

OT: Star Trek: The Next Generation on Family Guy

Recently I mentioned that there's an episode of Family Guy which includes the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Well it's now viewable online here.

Elizabeth George reference in Star Trek Destiny

I mentioned the other day that I'm reading David Mack's Gods of Night, the first in the Star Trek Destiny trilogy. It seems that the author is a fan of Elizabeth George - either the books and/or the tv series.

Taken from p260:
"I trust you've assigned new watch commanders for the next two shifts?"

"Yes sir" Worf said. "Commander Lynley is on the bridge now, and Lieutenant Commander Havers will relieve him at 0800."
I have put together an amazon list of the Star Trek: The Next Generation, Titan and Voyager books that are set after the film Nemesis so I can keep track of them. I have several already on my tbr and the library has some others. For some reason, Articles of the Federation by Keith RA DeCandido is rather rare and is listed at £28 second hand. It does seem to be available as an e-book for US$6-10 so I may have to go down that route as I didn't buy it at the time of publication and neither did the libraries I belong to.

OT: Star Trek: The Next Generation

I'm having a resurgence of interest in reading Star Trek books, perhaps kindled by the new film. Though I prefer TNG and Voyager. I'm currently reading Destiny: Gods of Night by David Mack, the first part in a trilogy. So I was pleased to see that the TNG main crew are providing voices for an episode of Family Guy (not something I watch but I can make an exception if/when it's shown in the UK). From tv.com:

Fox has revealed that former Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Wil Wheaton, Denise Crosby, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, and Jonathan Frakes will lend their voices to the March 29 episode of Family Guy "Not All Dogs Go to Heaven."

The geek-tastic episode sees the Griffins head to the Quahog Star Trek convention, where Stewie devises a plan to get the Next Geners back to the house.

I'd like to see some audio books read by original cast members, as Doctor Who and Stargate SG1 have done.

OT: Majel Roddenberry RIP

From USA Today:
NEW YORK (AP) — Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, has died. She was 76. Roddenberry, an actress who appeared in numerous Star Trek TV shows and movies, died Thursday of leukemia at her home in Bel-Air, Calif., her representative said.

At Roddenberry's side were family friends and her only son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr. Gene Roddenberry died in 1991.

Her romance with Roddenberry earned her the title The First Lady of Star Trek. A fixture in the Star Trek franchise, her roles included Nurse Christine Chapel in the original Star Trek, Lwaxana Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every spinoff of the 1966 cult series. She recently reprised the voice role in the upcoming Star Trek film directed by J.J. Abrams.

(OT) Star Trek XI Trailer

Here's the first trailer for the new Star Trek film, due out at Christmas, complete with Spock voice-over.

It's bigger and better on the official film website. Though that's about all there seems to be on it so far...

OT: Star Trek film casting news

I know this isn't Euro Crime in any way but it's a subject close to my heart. I was a huge fan of TNG, struggled through DS9, thought that the 3rd(?) series of Enterprise was pretty good - the one with the long story arc - and don't get me started on the hilarious Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home, so I've been keeping an eye on the new Star Trek film which is due out on Christmas Day 2008.

It's been confirmed that Heroes' likeable villain, Zachary Quinto, is to play the younger Spock and that Leonard Nimoy will also appear as the elder Spock. Kirk casting seems to be taking longer. Read more here and here.
