More New Tricks

BBC One has confirmed that a sixth series of New Tricks is to air next year.

Filming on the old-timers cop show, which stars Amanda Redman alongside James Bolam, Dennis Waterman and Alun Armstrong, is expected to commence on a new run of eight episodes later this year in and around London. The fifth series wrapped its transmission run on Monday night, averaging 8.4m viewers and a respectable 35.8% share of the audience.

The mystery behind BBC detective series New Tricks has been solved - all the main characters were named after writer Roy Mitchell's beloved West Bromich Albion (football/soccer team). Jack Halford, played by James Bolam, Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) and Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman), spell out the Halfords Lane Stand at the Hawthorns. "I didn't use to sit in the Halfords Lane End as a child but it's the best of the stands for the main characters," said Mitchell. "After all, one end was called the Rainbow End, so that was out."

Digital Spy reports that:

A fifth series of BBC One drama New Tricks has been given the go ahead following a successful fourth series, which peaked at 8.8 million viewers.

The show, made by Wall To Wall Television, has seen its audience increase week on week, and took a 38.5% audience share on its highest-rated episode.

Starring Amanda Redman, Dennis Waterman, Alun Armstrong and James Bolam, the new eight-part series will begin filming in London later this year.

Apparently the co-creator is Nigel McCrery of Silent Witness fame...

New Tricks - Series 3 on DVD

Series 3 of New Tricks was released on DVD on Monday. The current online price is around £15. This series, like Waking the Dead, looks at cold cases but this time the investigators are retired policeman. The cast includes James Bolam and Dennis Waterman.

The fourth series is currently showing on BBC1 on Monday evenings.
