Ellis Peters Historical Award - Winner

Thanks again to to Crime Scraps, I hear that the Ellis Peters Historical Award has been won by Andrew Martin for The Somme Stations. Also shortlisted were (with links to reviews on Euro Crime):

Rory Clements Prince (John Murray)
Sam Eastland The Red Coffin (Faber & Faber)
Gordon Ferris The Hanging Shed (Corvus)
RN Morris The Cleansing Flames (Faber & Faber)
Imogen Robertson Island of Bones (Headline)

The judging panel said of The Somme Stations: “Martin’s novels featuring railway detective Jim Stringer reveal their treasures in subtle fashion with a winning synthesis of period atmosphere, intriguing plotting and a passion for steam railways.”

Read more about each book on the CWA website.

From next year this award will again be a CWA Dagger award:
"The CWA has also announced some changes to the award, effective from 2012. The Ellis Peters award will once again become a CWA Dagger and submission dates will gradually move to correspond with the other CWA awards. Already entries are being accepted from UK publishers via the specialised Daggers website for publishers.

The changes are in line with the CWA’s commitment to increase the profile of their non-TV Dagger awards. It’s planned that the Ellis Peters and the other Dagger awards will be presented as part of a new awards ceremony in summer 2012. The new rules are being finalised and will be published shortly on the Daggers website.

    Dagger news and a prediction

News comes via The Bookseller that some of the Dagger shortlists will be announced next May at my favourite crime fiction convention, CrimeFest and that the Times is increasing its involvement:

The Times is to become the media partner for Crimefest in 2010, and will again provide press coverage for the Crime Writers Association (CWA) Dagger awards.

Crimefest is to take place from 20th—23rd May 2010, and the newspaper will carry a feature on the Bristol-based event in March. Following CrimeFest, the Times will also review the winners of its Sounds of Crime Awards for best abridged and unabridged crime audiobooks, sponsored by Audible.

The convention will also host the announcement of the CWA Dagger shortlists, and on 22nd May, the Times will again cover the shortlists, with reviewer Marcel Berlins supplying a a round-up of his favourites from the CWA Dagger in the Library, International, Non-Fiction, Short Story, and Debut Daggers.

The CrimeFest website is here (NB. Yrsa Sigurdardottir has recently signed up. CrimeFest is very supportive of translated authors and their translators.)

On a related note, Euro Crime reviewer and Crime Scraps blogger, Norman, has now read all the Ellis Peters Award shortlist. Norman's thoughts on who he wants to win and who he thinks will win, can be found here. The official winner will be announced on Thursday night.

    Ellis Peters Award - winner

My ditherings about whether to go to the CWA Ellis Peters Historical Crime Award ceremony on Monday were resolved by a migraine attack so apologies for the delay in reporting the results.

(The current purge by blogger on filtering out spam blogs by insisting on word verification when I write a post seems to be affecting my post scheduling operation.)

As predicted by Mike Ripley, the winner was Laura Wilson for Stratton's War, reviewed here by Mike and here by Maxine Clarke.

    The other nominees were:

Ariana Franklin - The Death Maze
Philip Kerr - A Quiet Flame
Andrew Martin - Death on a Branch Line
    C J Sansom - Revelation
Andrew Taylor - Bleeding Heart Square

    and also

"The CWA Ellis Peters judging panel has also asked for the following books from their long list to be published in recognition of their merit:"

    Marjorie Eccles - Last Nocturne
Ann Granger - A Mortal Curiosity
    H R F Keating - Inspector Ghote's First Case
    R N Morris - A Vengeful Longing
