Speak No Evil - Cover Opinions

This week's selection for "cover opinions" is the US and UK covers for Martyn Waites' Speak No Evil.

So what are you thoughts on the US (LHS) and UK (RHS) covers? Which would entice you to pick the book up if you were not familiar with Martyn Waites?

If you have read it, how well do the covers match the story?

Here are the Euro Crime reviews by Michelle and Laura.

  1. Neither would really tempt me - I'm a bit sick of that angel statue (even without your keen eye for copycat covers I can recall several with a variation on that theme) and the UK one looks a bit like they've photo-shopped Newcastle. I've not read any of his books but having skimmed Michelle and Laura's reviews I can't really see what either cover has to do with the plot really - though I guess the Newcastle scene is more relevant in that sense.

  2. I love Martyn Waites' stuff. Haven't read this one yet, so can't say if either cover suits. Personally, I prefer the US one. Much more brooding and atmospheric, and I like the angle it's been taken from. The UK one looks more as though someone has been told "This is a book set in Newcastle, go and take a photo of Newcastle." But it's Martyn Waites - I'd read it even if the cover was 20,000 live fleas.

Karen - I admit I haven't read this one, but the US cover appeals to me more. That's unusual for me, too, as I usually prefer UK covers.

The US cover is a bit more sinister, but the angel theme has been overdone.

The UK cover could be for almost any book taking place there. And it doesn't indicate a thriller or even mystery mood.

    It could be a travelogue.

  5. I haven't read any books by this author. I can't say I would purchase anything that had a sinister title. I prefer cozies.

  6. Oh, are you sure you haven´t mixed them up? *scratching my head*

Well, just for once I really like the US one, and I´d never look twice at the UK (touristy) cover unless I was looking for a guide book.
