It's an act of faith to put yourself in the hands of the translator... for both writer and reader. How do we know if a translation fits the writer's vision? Unless they are able to work as a team of course. At the end of the day the translation needs to read well... and they don't always.Little Grey Dollhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16193380446352733114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32065323.post-42381895818266142262014-02-20T14:11:37.735+00:002014-02-20T14:11:37.735+00:00Good point, Karen,

I'm sure I've been put off certain writers (Dostoyevsky, for instance) because of poor translations and then rediscovered them thanks to good translations. Very under-rated skill, and I think that translators' names should appear more prominently on the cover of books.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32065323.post-63478805860359530962014-02-20T07:56:27.615+00:002014-02-20T07:56:27.615+00:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10155290461705783846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32065323.post-2941499576485787662014-02-19T19:33:14.342+00:002014-02-19T19:33:14.342+00:00Equally important is how a lousy translation can r...Equally important is how a lousy translation can ruin a novel.<br />I found the few English translations of the Maigret stories I had read in French to be too British for my American understanding and taste. This is why I'm looking forward to the new versions by Penguin.David P.
