The Chalk Circle Man - Cover Opinions

This week's selection for "cover opinions" is the US and UK covers for Fred Vargas's The Chalk Circle Man tr. Sian Reynolds.

So what are you thoughts on the US (LHS) and UK (RHS) covers? Which would entice you to pick the book up if you were not familiar with Fred Vargas?

If you have read it, how well does the cover match the story?

Here are the Euro Crime reviews by Fiona and Michelle.

I like the bottom one best. The US version looks too bloody for an Adamsberg story, although I've yet to read this particular one. The blue covers are more stylish and subtle, which seems better suited to Vargas' quiet hero and thoughtful approach to story-telling.

I hate the US cover. The UK covers are nicer and more attuned to the story. (I think you meant to write Vargas and not Dahl in your post?)

I like the one top right. Nice & brooding. Definitely suggests the dark corners of a Vargas tale, tho I haven't read this one yet.

I prefer the ones on the right.

Ugh, the US version is ghastly! The other two are far more evocative of the story. I think, if pressed I'd have to say I like the bottom one best.

I am in agreement with the others, the US one is awful in general and particularly horrid for a book in this series (though I haven't read this one either). The US cover would put me off buying the book.

I have to say that living over here in the U.S., that I read the version with the U.S. cover. It was fine, although at the time I had wished I were holding a book with a less graphic, gory cover.
